How to order
the right cup of coffee

You are strolling along the streets of Paris or Rome, passing by wonderful cafés, smelling the rich aroma of coffee which tickles your senses. Craving a cup of coffee, cappuccino or other, you find a nice spot, order it, already savouring its taste. The waiter/ress brings you something different from what you expected. Thinking he/she may have misunderstood, you correct him/her and repeat your order. "But yes, Madame/Monsieur, this is what you ordered." No, he/she is not being rude; in Europe, some coffee expressions are different from those in the United States.

In France, a café noir is a single shot of espresso and not a mug of black American coffee which is called a café filtre. A café serré is an extra-strong espresso while a café allongé is a weak espresso.

In Italy, if you order a caffé, you will get an espresso. An espresso lungo, a shot of espresso with twice the water, is as close as you will get to American filter coffee. A cappuccino chiaro has less coffee and more milk, while a cappuccino scuro has more coffee and less milk.
