Café de Colombia & Tennis: A Brief History
Café de Colombia has been closely involved
with the tennis world since 1993, when it sponsored
its first of a long list of major tennis events, the
Madrid Open in Spain. That year, Stefan
Edberg took home top honors. But he was not the only
celebrity at the matches: our very own tennis aficionado,
Juan Valdez was there to cheer on the players as well.
Since then, Juan has made a habit of attending as
many of the Café de Colombia tennis sponsorships
as he can, sometimes even joining the champions for
a cup of 100% Colombian Coffee after the events. Café
de Colombias sponsorship of the Madrid Open
in 1993 increased awareness of Café de Colombia
and of Juan Valdez. In fact, one of Juans greatest
fans, the Spanish Princess Cristina de Borbón,
was spotted at the events, proudly donning her autographed
hat, signed by Juan!

| In 1995, Café de Colombia added two major tennis
events to its sponsorships docket: the Paris Bercy
tournament and the US Open. At the US Open, the 500,000
attendees enjoyed unlimited complimentary cups of 100%
Colombian Coffee throughout the two week tournament.
Café de Colombia also organized what was called
"Colombian Coffee Day" in an effort to bring,
literally, a taste of Colombian culture to the spectators
of the US Open. And, of course, Juan Valdez was there
to greet everyone, to sign autographs, and to pose for
pictures. Our faithful cafetero did not miss a single
match! He even met up with the victor of the 1995 US
Open, Pete Sampras!
Juan Valdez crossed the Atlantic, once again, to rally support for
Canada’s international women’s and men’s championships, at the 2001
Canadian Open. It was the fifth year that Café de Colombia
sponsored the event, debuting in 1996 with "Colombian Coffee
Day" on court signage, and free coffee for participants and spectators
alike. Café de Colombia will once again be a proud sponsor
of the Canadian Open in 2002.
